Do you need to tip in Greece, Italy and Turkey?

Greece adds no general service charge, though some bills list bread separately. Italy lists coperto cover charges of 2 to 4 EUR, which is not a tip. Turkey often adds service in tourist restaurants, so we read the bill first.
We tip for attentive service and skip when bills already include service. Staff accept coins and small notes without fuss. You keep 1, 2 and 5 EUR or lira notes ready.
How much should you tip at restaurants?
Leave 5 to 10 percent for good table service and round bar bills. Adjust by bill clarity.
In Greece we leave 5 to 10 percent on taverna bills of 30 to 60 EUR, or round small bills up 1 to 2 EUR. In Italy we leave 1 to 3 EUR per person above coperto for good service. In Turkey we leave 5 to 10 percent when no service charge appears.
Card terminals often lack tip prompts, so cash tips work best. We hand tips to staff rather than leaving them on busy terraces. Large groups of six or more add 5 to 8 percent as a group gesture.

How should you tip taxis and transfers?
Round taxi fares up 1 to 3 EUR and tip private drivers 10 to 20 EUR per day. Keep change simple.
Meters run widely in Athens, Rome and Istanbul, with airport flat rates posted at ranks. In 2026 Athens airport to center runs about 40 EUR by day tariff. Rounding to the next 2 EUR covers short rides.
Private drivers who handle bags, water and timing earn 10 to 20 EUR per day from couples. Full-week drivers earn a closing tip of 50 to 80 EUR. You pay tolls and parking as billed, separate from tips.
How should you tip hotels and tours?
Leave 1 to 2 EUR per bag for porters and 10 to 20 EUR per group for day guides. Small daily sums suit housekeeping.
Porters earn 1 to 2 EUR per bag for stair carries in old town hotels. Housekeeping receives 2 to 3 EUR per night in envelopes on longer stays. Front desks need no tip for standard help.
Day guides earn 10 to 20 EUR per couple for strong half days and 20 to 40 EUR for full days. Skippers and crew split 20 to 40 EUR per group on shared boats. You tip in cash at closing.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Avoid double-tipping on service charges and large card-tip entries. Read the bill first.
Service-included bills in Turkey and some Italian tourist rooms already add 10 to 12 percent. Adding another 10 percent doubles the charge. We check lines for service, cover and tax before adding.
Carrying small notes prevents over-tipping for change. We avoid promising tips upfront for standard service. Calm thanks with correct sums close the exchange.
