Greece First Trip: Where to Start for a 7 to 10 Day Route

By Sofia MarchettiApril 16, 20264 min read

Greece works well when you limit the map and allow time in each stop. We usually plan Athens for two nights plus one island group for the rest of your week. You avoid rushed transfers and you learn how ferries, taxis and hotel check-in times actually run.

Where should you start a first trip to Greece?

Start in Athens for two nights and then move to one island group. This order keeps flight connections simple and gives you a clear base for ferries.

Athens gives you the Acropolis area, the central museums and a compact historic center that you can walk in one full day. We book hotels near Plaka or Koukaki so you can reach sites on foot and use the metro for the airport run. In 2026 a central three star double runs 120 to 190 EUR per night and the airport metro takes about 40 minutes.

From Athens you connect by ferry from Piraeus or Rafina or by a 45 minute domestic flight to the islands. We advise one island group per trip, either Cyclades or Saronic or Sporades, because mixing groups adds travel days. You keep two to four nights per island and you return to Athens the night before a morning flight home.

Should you choose the Cyclades or the Saronic Islands first?

Choose the Cyclades for classic island scenery and choose the Saronic Islands for short ferry times. Both suit first-time visitors with different pace needs.

The Cyclades include Naxos, Paros and Mykonos, with ferry times of 3 to 5 hours from Piraeus on high-speed services. In 2026 high-speed tickets run 45 to 75 EUR per person and conventional ferries run 35 to 55 EUR. We place first-timers on Naxos or Paros for four nights because beaches, old towns and bus links are easy to use.

Saronic islands such as Aegina, Hydra and Spetses sit 40 to 90 minutes from Piraeus, which suits shorter trips or travelers who prefer less transit. Hotels in 2026 run 100 to 170 EUR per night for a mid-range double and day trips stay practical. You can pair two Saronic islands with three nights in Athens and keep driving to zero.

How many nights do you need in Athens and on the islands?

You need two nights in Athens and three to four nights per island. A seven night trip covers Athens plus two islands at a steady pace.

A common 2026 plan we use is two nights Athens, three nights Naxos and two nights Santorini, with ferries of two to three hours between islands. This keeps one travel slot every third day and leaves full days for beaches and town walks. You should keep the last night near Athens if your return flight leaves before 11 am.

For ten nights we add a third island or extend one stop to five nights for a slower rhythm. Daily costs in 2026 average 180 to 280 EUR per couple for mid-range hotels, meals and local transport, excluding ferries and flights. We build one free afternoon per stop so you can adjust for wind delays or heat.

Athens plus Saronic2 plus 540 to 90 min ferry
Athens plus Cyclades2 plus 5 to 83 to 5 hour ferry
Athens plus one island2 plus 41 flight or 1 ferry

When should you book ferries and hotels for Greece in 2026?

Book hotels three to five months ahead for June to September and book ferries four to eight weeks ahead. This window secures schedules and cabin choice.

Summer routes publish in spring and high-speed seats sell in order of departure time, with morning sailings going first. We reserve refundable hotels early and then lock ferries once your island order is fixed. In 2026 reserved seats cost 5 to 10 EUR extra on some high-speed operators and numbered seats reduce boarding stress.

If you travel in May or October you can book hotels six to ten weeks ahead with wider choice. We still pre-book Friday and Sunday ferries because weekend traffic from Athens stays steady. You receive e-tickets by email and you collect paper boarding cards only where the operator requires it.

What practical details should you set before you go?

Set cash, timing and luggage rules before you leave. Small choices remove daily friction on islands.

Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, but small tavernas, kiosks and some taxis still prefer cash. We advise 100 to 150 EUR in small notes per couple for a week, plus an ATM card with low fees. You should carry water, sun cover and a light layer for evening ferry decks.

Luggage limits matter on high-speed ferries, where large cases share open racks near the entrance. We plan carry-on plus one checked case per person and we confirm hotel porter or stair access in old towns. Arrival after 3 pm matches standard check-in and avoids waiting with bags in the heat.
