Split or Dubrovnik as a Base: Ports, Day Trips and Prices

By Sofia MarchettiJuly 10, 20264 min read

Split and Dubrovnik anchor opposite ends of the Dalmatian coast, and ferries shape what you can reach. We use Split for island variety and Dubrovnik for walls, bays and Montenegro day options. You match the base to your island list.

Which city works better as a base?

Split works better for island hopping and Dubrovnik works better for old town depth plus south-coast day trips. Ferry maps make the call.

Split connects to Hvar, Brac, Vis and Solta with crossings of 50 minutes to 2 hours. In 2026 catamaran tickets run 15 to 35 EUR per leg. Mid-range doubles in Split run 130 to 230 EUR in summer.

Dubrovnik connects to Lokrum, Mljet and the Elaphiti islands, with short 15 to 45 minute rides. Hotel rates run higher, with mid-range doubles at 170 to 300 EUR in 2026. Walls, forts and sea kayaking fill two full days without a ferry.

How do day trips compare?

Split day trips spread across islands and Trogir, while Dubrovnik day trips center on bays, walls and nearby towns. Time on water differs.

From Split we run Hvar town for lanes and harbor views, Brac for Zlatni Rat beach and Vis for coves if seas allow. Day sails run 8 to 10 hours with swim stops and lunch aboard at 80 to 130 EUR per person. You return by 6 pm for old town dinners.

From Dubrovnik we run Lokrum for swimming, Cavtat for promenades and Mljet for lakes by catamaran. Sea kayak mornings run 2 to 3 hours at 35 to 55 EUR. You avoid long bus rides and keep evenings inside the walls.

How do 2026 prices compare?

Dubrovnik runs 20 to 30 percent higher than Split for comparable hotels and meals. Island transit narrows the gap on active weeks.

Split mains in the old town run 16 to 28 EUR and day-trip lunches add 15 to 25 EUR. Taxis from the airport run 35 to 50 EUR and the airport bus runs 8 to 10 EUR. Daily mid-range spend averages 170 to 260 EUR per couple.

Dubrovnik wall tickets run about 35 to 40 EUR in 2026 and restaurant mains run 20 to 34 EUR. Airport buses run 8 to 12 EUR and taxis run 40 to 55 EUR. Daily mid-range spend averages 210 to 320 EUR per couple.

When should you visit each city?

Visit in May, June and September for walking weather and workable ferry seats. August brings peak rates and midday heat.

Split benefits from shoulder months because island buses and boats run but lanes stay passable. We book Hvar and Vis legs a week ahead in June and two weeks ahead in August. Morning departures reduce wind cancellations.

Dubrovnik old town lanes crowd from 10 am to 3 pm when cruise ships dock. We walk walls at 8 am and schedule Lokrum after 2 pm. September seas stay warm and hotel rates ease 15 to 20 percent from August.

Can you combine Split and Dubrovnik in one week?

You can combine them with three nights Split plus three nights Dubrovnik and one island night. The coastal bus or catamaran links the two.

The bus runs about 4 to 4.5 hours and costs 20 to 35 EUR in 2026, while summer catamarans link Split, Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik in stages. We prefer the catamaran chain for views when seas run calm. One night on Korcula or Hvar breaks the journey.

We place Dubrovnik last for flight choice and slower evenings. Luggage storage at bus stations costs a few euros per bag. You keep ferry tickets on phones with screenshots for port signal gaps.
